2023 Ford Bronco Review| Bronco Raptor Explained
When Ford engineers set about to create the ultimate Ford off-roading SUV, they created the Ford Bronco. For this model year, they have made life even more interesting with two-tone Heritage trim levels and, of course, the 2023 Ford Bronco Raptor.
The 2022 Bronco won prestigious awards including the North American Utility of the Year and Forbes Wheels of the Year. It scored other awards such as Motor1 Best Adventure Vehicle, Top Gear American Car of the Year, CarBuzz Off-Road Warrior Award, Autotrader Best Vehicle for Adventure, and SEMA 4x4 of the Year.
In this review, we’ll explain how the Bronco Raptor is earning its nameplate. We’ll also look at how the Bronco is standing up to the Jeep Wrangler in terms of power, efficiency, styling, and capability. Keep scrolling to learn more about the Ford SUV’s trail prowess.
Special 2023 Editions
Broncos are offered in Heritage and Heritage Limited Editions. This 2023 trim reflects on the history of the Bronco nameplate which dates to 1966.
Classic elements start with the fun Oxford White painted roof. This paint is applied to the grille for an interesting white contrast to the grille works. Ford is written across the grille in Race Red letters. There’s a side stripe to add to the classic elements.
Wheels get the Oxford white treatment to complete the transformation on Heritage trims. Heritage Limited trims have a white-painted lip on the gloss black-painted wheels with dog dish centers.
Heritage Limited trims are available in throwback colors: Yellowstone Metallic and Peak Blue. Both it and the Heritage are offered in Robin’s Egg Blue, imitating a color from the 1966 Bronco exterior color palette.
Four Wheel Drive Superiority
Ford knows a thing or two about four-wheel drive, and it developed the two available systems specifically for off-roading Broncos. Terrain management has special modes, known as GOAT (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain). Depending on the trim level, there are up to seven modes. The off-road choices include Slippery and Sand, Mud and Ruts, Baja, and Rock Crawl.
Standard four-wheel drive starts with a two-speed ESOF transfer case. This electronic shift on the fly feature responds as needed while prioritizing front wheel drive during on-road travel. The most advanced 4WD has a two-speed electromechanical transfer case. In addition to automatic mode, drivers can select 2H or 4H for the best off-roading adventures.
Ford engineers have developed a High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension, and the manufacturer has put it on every Bronco. This has been optimized to allow for higher speeds while off-roading.
Sasquatch Package
One way Ford has made the Bronco special is by simply providing some of its most exciting off-road capability on all trim levels. The Sasquatch Package is available on the two-door and four-door Big Bend, Black Diamond, and Badlands.
This upgrade adds a ton of equipment to turn the Bronco into a rival of top Jeep Wrangler trims. The Ford SUV stands taller with a high-clearance suspension. It’s also wider with a two-inch wider track. Plus it has bash plates and wider fender flares.
Hoss-tuned, long-travel dampers help increase ride height. These are Bilstein position sensitive features with end-stop control valves.
Sasquatch beadlock-capable wheels protect 35-inch Goodyear mud-terrain tires chosen specifically for these models. The front and rear Dana electronic locking axles allow for a 4.7:1 final drive ratio. The maximum crawl ratio for the manual transmission Bronco Sasquatch is 94.75:1.
Performance
The standard Bronco engine is better than the Jeep Wrangler standard hands down. Ford equips its with a 2.3-liter I-4 Ecoboost. This cranks out 300 horsepower, beating the Jeep’s 285 horsepower. It matches that with 325 lb-ft of torque, beating the 2022 Jeep’s 265 lb-ft.
Driving enthusiasts may want to step up to the 2.7 liter Ecoboost engine. It cranks out 330 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. These engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The word is that the 2023 model will have a more powerful engine than the 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor. We’re talking 418 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, Ford doesn’t need a fuel-thirsty V8 to get that power. Instead the Bronco Raptor has a 3.0 liter twin turbo V-6. It is working hard to earn its trim level nameplate, borrowed from the popular F-150 Raptor.
Trail Toolbox
The Trail Toolbox package adds smart trail-driving extras. Trail Control is a Ford favorite that could also be called slow-speed cruise control. The system can maintain speed while the driver focuses on steering.
When the driver controls speed, they can use Trail One-Pedal Drive. This allows them to use one pedal instead of both. Trail Turn Assist, another one of Ford’s tech marvels, helps the front wheels to turn at different angles when needed for tight turns.
Body Styles and Open Air Rides
This Ford off-roader comes in a 2-door body style that has the sharpest turn circle and approach angles. For a more spacious cabin and a bigger cargo area, the choice is the 4-door style.
Broncos have class-exclusive features such as their frameless doors. That makes it easier to remove when the owner wants to switch to open air driving. Cowl-mounted mirrors, another exclusive, ensure that the driver still has side views if the doors are off.
On 4-door models, owners can utilize protective door bags and store the doors in the vehicle cargo hold. This allows greater flexibility when choosing to enjoy open-air driving away from home.
Special Interiors
Heritage editions have plaid cloth seats and an Oxford white instrument panel. Trim-specific floor liners add to the atmosphere. With distinctive badging and red stitching for contrast, Navy Pier microsuede dresses the console, armrests and seats. This edition is shaped around the Big Bend trim level and includes the Sasquatch package.
Limited editions have throwback plaid inserts in the leather trimmed seats. White and Race Red stitching adds color and contrast. It’s built on the Badlands trim features with its 2.7-liter Ecoboost engine.
2023 Ford Bronco Raptors add a 12-inch digital closter to the model’s distinctive horizontal dash. Seats wear Black Onyx marine-grade vinyl with easy-wash rubberized flooring. Code Orange color accents and low-gloss fiber elements dress up the look.
For a more upscale cabin, the upholstery comes in unique laser-perforated Black Onyx Neo suede. It’s combined with leather-wrapped front-seat bolsters. The soft dashboard is topped in a high quality vinyl. This trim level offers orange seat belts for even more flair. The distinctive steering wheel is made extra thick with sport contouring.

Trim Levels and Technologies
The Bronco cockpit is state-of-the-art with push button start, the Sync4 8-inch touchscreen, keyless entry, and an available 4G WiFi hotspot. Collision avoidance tech includes a warning system with a responding autobrake. Hill Descent Control is standard with the manual transmission. All Broncos have post-collision braking with the aim of preventing secondary impact.
Big Bend models have more off-road GOAT modes. They are offered with more packages. Outer Banks, Wildtrak and Everglades models add ambient lighting and dual-zone automatic climate controls. These trim levels have standard lane keeping technology and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control can slow and go, making it more useful in busy traffic.
Black Diamond and Badland models are ready for roughing it. They have marine grade vinyl seats and rubberized floors for fast clean up. The MOLLE strap system is standard, helping you keep everything in place when bouncing around on the trail.
