2023 Ford Maverick Review | Hybrid Midsize Truck
Given the success of the 2022 Ford Maverick, it’s no wonder that the new model year brings a new trim level. The 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor arrives with the Off-Road Package that adventure lovers want.
These midsize trucks have remarkable payload and towing capability given their trim size. Ford includes CoPilot360 technologies to make life safer and driver easier.
Here’s what you need to know about the new Maverick Tremor, standard Maverick Hybrid, and other trim levels. For some extra fun, schedule a test drive.
Tremor Models
With its special grille finish and orange-accent tow hooks, the Maverick Tremor Off-road Package stands apart from other Mavericks. The headlights, taillights and Ford logos have a blacked-out look. Even without these details, the truck would be recognized by its taller, more assertive stance.
With the Maverick Tremor Appearance package, the pickup truck becomes even more distinctive. The shopper’s exterior color choice is paired with a roof painted Carbonized Gray. The mirror caps get the same treatment.
Black side graphics decorate the hood and lower body. Adding more color, the 17-inch aluminum wheels wear a combination of Tremor Orange and dark gray. All-terrain tires help the driver make full use of Tremor equipment.
A special lower front fascia allows for a more aggressive angle when off-roading. There are steel skid plates to improve protection on the trail.
Maverick Trim Levels
A black surround sets off the black mesh grille on the XL trim level. The cockpit has a tilt-telescopic steering wheel and a space-saving gear dial. Rugged 2-tone cloth uses a medium dark slate to provide a subtle contrast to black onyx.
XLT trims wear a Navy Pier blue in place of the black. XLT Luxury standards include an 8-way power chair. Lariat trims feature ActiveX upholstery in a rich Desert Brown. The Tremor Off-road Package can be added to either of the top two trims.
Hybrid, Ecoboost and Tremor Powertrains
With its cutting-edge hybrid technology, the entry-level XL has a 191-horsepower combined output. The XLT, Lariat and Tremor models have a Ford Ecoboost engine. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, this 250-horsepower turbo generates 277 pound-feet.
Tremors will harness that high level of torque to provide an extra push over challenging terrain. A heavy-duty transmission cooler is added to cool the engine during high-torque travel on the trail.
This is the first year that Ford Trail Control is on the menu. Maverick Tremor drivers can use this cruise control type feature when traversing difficult terrain. At slow speeds, the truck will accelerate and decelerate to maintain a set speed while the driver steers.
Trail-Minded All Wheel Drive
Maverick Tremors have a special all-wheel drive system that provides capability while minimizing weight gain. A twin-clutch rear-drive set-up is mated with an electronically-controlled differential lock. This allows the truck to move maximum torque to one wheel if needed.
On the road, drive modes include tow-haul and snow. Off road, drive modes assist with challenges such as mud or sand.
The ride height is boosted by an inch by the Tremor suspension. Specially tuned springs and shocks make handling easier on the road and take care of the worst bumps on the trail.
Towing, Payload and Ground Clearance
Hybrid payload is rated at 1500 pounds. When the tailgate is flat, it can handle some 500 pounds. Hybrid towing is rated at 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. All Ford trucks have a tow-haul mode to assist with big loads.
These figures are the same for front-wheel drive, gas-engine Mavericks. However, XLT or Lariat Ecoboost AWD models can tow up to 4,000 pounds with a special tow package. 2023 Maverick Tremors are rated for 1,200 pounds of payload. The tow rating is 2,000 pounds with the right equipment.
Tremor ground clearance is 9.4 inches. It is 8.6 inches on other Maverick AWD models and 8.3 inches on FWD trim levels.
SuperCrew Spaciousness
The Maverick Tremor has a spacious two-row cabin. SuperCrew measurements include 42.8 inches of front legroom and 36.9 inches of rear legroom. Passenger volume is 101.5 cubic feet.
In the hybrid, passenger volume is still generous at 100.3 cubic feet. Rear legroom is 35.9 cubic inches. There’s a rear storage bin as well as fold-up seats to provide cargo space. Ford has an integrated tether system that provides special slots for accessorizing.
Clever Bed Features
All Mavericks have a 4.5-foot bed. Low thresholds make it easy to load from either side.
Cargo volume is 33.3 cubic feet. The box is 54.4 inches long, but it can grow to almost six feet when the tailgate is down.
D-rings and tie-downs allow owners to devise their own cargo management, although official accessories are available. Other available features include bed storage units, 110-volt outlets, and pre-wired 12-volt sources.
Driver Assistance
At the low price of the XL Hybrid, there’s a suite of helpful driver aids. These include a forward collision system with a warning, pedestrian watch, and autobrake. Other aspects include dynamic brake support and automatic high beams.
With the XLT models, there are more tools to assist with crash avoidance. In particular, side crash scenarios are easier to avoid with the helpful lane departure alert, steering assist, and blind spot monitor.
Parking is easier with the standard rearview camera. XLT models add a rear cross traffic alert. You can also get rear parking sensors.
Lariat models offer adaptive cruise control. It works well in busy traffic thanks to stop-and-go technology. It has lane centering to further assist the driver. Evasive steering assist is a Ford exclusive feature now offered on the 2023 models.
Operating Costs and Fuel Economy
2023 Ford Mavericks are the most affordable hybrid vehicles as well as one of the most affordable midsize trucks. This gives it an advantage at purchase. Not surprisingly the 2022 model earned a Best Overall Value Award from Intellichoice. It is an Editor’s Choice vehicle at Car and Driver.
EPA estimates report it can earn 40 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Total driving range is about 500 miles. Rated at 37 mpg, the hybrid truck can save $2,750 over 5 years, according to the federal fuel economy website.
Assisted by the pickup truck’s low curb weight and an aerodynamic build, Ecoboost models earn 25 (AWD) or 26 (FWD) combined. Highway fuel economy is 29 or 30 mpg.
