2023 Ford Ranger Review | Midsize Truck
This competitive truck is hitting on all cylinders for the new model year. Shoppers will find the latest technologies, excellent performance, and remarkable tow ratings on the 2023 Ford Ranger. Then there’s the exciting Tremor package.
For all the details, check out this 2023 Ranger review. You’ll find facts and figures comparing it to other midsize trucks as well as the latest information on its new dash tech, driver assistance, and trim levels.
Performance and Strength
When it comes to capability, the 2023 Ford Ranger for sale is one of the most dynamic in its class. Ford Ecoboost technology delivers the horsepower and torque you need while keeping fuel economy reasonable. The turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine is gutsy, quick and strong.
Output is 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the Toyota Tacoma V6, horsepower is similar at 278, but the torque rate is much lower at 265 lb-ft. The Jeep Gladiator is similar, producing 285 horsepower and just 260 lb-ft of torque.
Best Tow Ratings for the Money
The 2023 Ford Ranger offers more towing for the money. How does that figure? Well, the Ford Ranger can tow 7,500 pounds when properly equipped. As long as they choose the tow package, shoppers enjoy this much tow capacity with the XL, XLT and Lariat trim levels.
The Frontier can’t tow that much (6,720 lbs). Neither can the Toyota Tacoma V6 (6,500 lbs). The Jeep Gladiator tows 7,650 pounds, but that extra 150 pounds comes with a price tag of about $5,000 more than the Ford Ranger.
Payload is another place the Ford excels. A Ranger’s payload rating for the SuperCab 6-foot box is 1,860 lbs. The SuperCrew 4x2 model can haul up to 1,770 pounds. That’s more than the Toyota Tacoma SR top number (1,685 lb) or the Frontier top number (1,669 lb).
10-Speed Automatic Transmission
Rangers are unique due to their 10-speed automatic transmission. You’ll find 6-speed, 8-speed and maybe 9-speed transmissions on its rivals, but Fords are the only midsize trucks with 10 speeds.
The finely tuned 10-speed automatic was designed specifically for the Ranger. Ford drivers have a broader range of gears at the low end for trail-riding and at the top end for better highway acceleration.
Trim Levels and Cab Sizes
The Ford Ranger XL is packed with modern appointments that can make you forget that this truck can work hard whenever asked to haul or tow. Comfortable seats are well-shaped and well-padded. The 6-speaker audio system and dash screens are paired with Bluetooth functions. A USB port and dual 12V powerpoints are standard. The ride is relatively quiet thanks to anti-vibration techniques and noise insulation.
With Sync dash tech on the Ford Ranger XLT, you have access to more infotainment connectivity. The 8-inch capacitive touchscreen is matched to a 4.2-inch color productive screen in the instrument panel.
XLT quality is higher with premium cloth upholstery and full carpeting. Phoenix AZ drivers will appreciate the dual zone climate controls that regulate air conditioning separately for both front positions.
As the top trim, Ford Ranger Lariat models are the most richly furnished. They have power chairs and leather upholstery. Tremor models are sportier with Miko suede inserts in the seats for extra softness. There’s colorful stitching for contrast.
Obviously the larger Super Crew cabin is the most spacious. However, it should be noted that the Ford Ranger Super Cab has more second-row legroom than rival 4-seat models. Rangers have 30.5 inches for backseat passengers. That’s more than the Frontier (26.2 in), Colorado (28.6 in) or Toyota Tacoma (24.6 in).
SuperCabs are made more utilitarian by having removable cushions and folding seats to provide a storage area. These extended cabs also have under-seat storage. If ordering the Ranger XL trim level, you can ask for the rear seats to be deleted.
SuperCrew have seating for five. Front seats can include an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s chair and a 6-way power passenger chair. The rear bench has under seat storage.
Appearance Packages and Exterior Colors
The XL STX Appearance Package dresses the interior with premium Ebony seats. It adds 17-inch silver-painted wheels, special box decal, and fog lights.
The Chrome Appearance package adds chrome running boards and chrome bumpers. Aiming for a more muscular appearance, the Black Appearance package adds black exterior accents.
Introduced on the 2022 Ford Ranger, the Splash package dresses the interior with orange accent stitching. There’s a fun Carbon Weave Tuxedo Stripe on the bolstered seats. The grille gains a black painted surround and black bars. These have fun orange accent nostrils. More orange accents are added with the box decal, tailgate graphics and bodyside graphics.
Tremors have a special black 2-bar styled grille with a magnetic surround. For color, there are fun red accent nostrils. Magnetic painted flares decorate the wheel arches.
Exterior colors include Oxford white, Shadow black, Carbonized Gray, Cactus Gray, and Azure Gray. Personality colors include Iconic Silver, Velocity Blue, Race Red, and Hot Pepper.
Off-Roading and the Ranger Tremor
For those who want to go off-road, the Tremor package takes us closer to having a Ford Ranger Raptor. This package can be applied to SuperCrew 4x4 models, building on either the XLT or Lariat trim levels. This flexibility allows for two price points for the exciting off-roading mid size truck.
The exterior gets extra skid plates to provide protection for its vital engine, suspension and transmission parts. Hoop style step bars are useful for entry but won’t block off road adventures.
It stands taller thanks to the heavy-duty suspension that has been modified for off-road use. Fox shocks add another level of protection against difficult terrain. Trail Control and Terrain Management are standards.
The FX4 Off-road package is another way to equip a Ranger for the trail. It adds skid plates, Terrain Management, and an off-road suspension. Plus, it has an electronic rear differential to move torque quickly to the back wheels. If you want to stick with front wheel drive, the FX2 package adds the special suspension and differential.
Smart Fuel Economy
Fuel economy is another positive in the Ranger’s favor. It earns 21 mpg in the city versus the Colorado (19 mpg city), Frontier (18 mpg city), and Gladiator (16 mpg city). The difference continues on the highway where the Ranger earns 26 mpg. Frontier and Colorado models earn only 24 mpg while Jeep Gladiators earn just 23 mpg highway.
How much do these numbers matter? According to the calculators at the Fuel Economy website, a Ford Ranger can save $2,750 over five years when compared with the Jeep Gladiator. There are no vehicles that match your search criteria currently available online; however, there may be one available in-store.
