2023 Ford Super Duty Review | Ford F 250 F350 F450
Full-size pickups need to pull their weight in every way. That’s the philosophy behind the new Ford Super Duty -- whether it’s the 2023 Ford F 250 or its siblings, the F-350 and F450.
Ford has set a high bar for what a heavy duty full-size pickup truck should be able to do. This makes it critical that the new Super Duty model year do more and do it smarter than the 2022 Ford Super Duty.
This new generation of Ford pickup trucks is more aerodynamic, and new engine choices make it more powerful. Utility is expanded with rear bumper steps at each corner. There are more available amenities including Max Recline front seats for quick naps.
Here’s what you need to know about the changes to the F Series. For fun, you can schedule a test drive at Earnhardt Ford.
Performance
The Super Duty build is lighter weight, allowing it to do more with every horse under the hood. In addition, it has front vertical vents that reduces the chances that air pressure will build up under the hood.
A new 6.8 liter V8 is smaller and lighter than the outgoing V8. This allows it to do more and yet it still promises to match or better the current V8’s 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The 7.3 liter PFI V8 is still hard to beat. It generates 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft.
Ready for anything, the 6.7 liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel returns. Output is, at least, 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. It’s standard on the Ford F-450 and available on the F-250 and F-350. Clearly the high level of torque ensures the best performance whether towing a heavy trailer or hauling a heavy load.
Another new powertrain is the high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke. This 90-degree diesel V8 benefits from a water-jacketed turbocharger. It’s a new take on strength for the modern age.
Ford pairs its engines with one of two TorqueShift 10-speed automatic transmissions. Tow ratings for SRW turbo models can tow 22,000 pounds. DRW turbo diesel models can tow up to 37,999 pounds.
Bed Sizes
Large beds can handle more cargo. That’s the strategy behind the two sizes available on the F-250, F-350 and F-450. Today’s Ford Super Duty has bumper steps to assist with loading and unloading.
With the three-person cab, there is an 8-foot bed. It is 98.1 inches long with minimum width of 50.5 inches and maximum width of 66.9 inches. Total space measures 78.5 cubic feet.
This oversized bed size and powertrain strength allows for best-in-class payloads. A Ford F 450 4x2 can handle 6,210 pounds. The Ford F-350 Double-Rear-Wheel models can handle 7,200 pounds of cargo.
Two-row cabs may be combined with the big bed or a 6.75- foot bed. It is 81.9 inches long with the same width as the larger bed. Even with the smaller bed, payload ratings are still remarkable. For instance, the F350 4x4 Supercab can handle 4,610 pounds of cargo.
Cabin Sizes
The 2-row cabs were developed specifically for the F-250 and higher models. With two rows, the layout provides seating for six. Shoppers can choose front bucket seats with a padded center console.
SuperCabs have ample space, especially on the front row. However, there isn’t as much rear legroom or rear cargo space as there is in Crew Cabs.
Definitely the most spacious, Crew Cab 2nd-row legroom is 43.6 inches, and rear headroom is 40.4 inches. Passengers will feel like they are on the front row. Comforts include an armrest and additional cupholders.
Rear cargo space is 52.1 cubic feet. The seats fold to create a rear flat floor. Among its many storage nooks, there’s a hidden 2nd-row compartment.
Trim Levels
From the standpoint of trim levels, the XL and XLT trims can be combined with any cab. Lariats offer both the SuperCab and the Crew Cab while the more luxurious trims are offered only with the Crew Cab. This includes the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
It surprises many shoppers to find out that even the F-450 is available with these six trim levels. F Series trucks are more closely aligned with the F150 features, technologies and amenities than ever before.
XL trucks have vinyl or cloth seats in a medium earth gray color. There are dual screens in the cockpit. WiFi is available, and a rearview camera is standard. F250 and F350 models offer all three cabin sizes while the Ford F450 offers the regular or Crew Cab.
Super Duty XLT
Packed with value, the XLT trim has more technology, more amenities, and more of the options that make Ford trucks so desirable. For instance, the 2023 Ford F-250 XLT has a forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. It also has BLIS, the sophisticated blind spot system.
Towing is easier with XLT standards like trailer sway control, a trailer brake controller, and the exclusive Smart Trailer Tow Connector. Convex tow mirrors are telescoping, folding, and power-heated. This is the first trim eligible for Ford’s exclusive trailer tow camera system and the unique Ford Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
Hauling is easier, too, with BoxLink locking cleats. This premium feature is extra strong to hold heavy loads in place. Additional utility features include more 110V/400W outlets and a SecuriCode keypad.
More comfortable for long days behind the wheel, an 8-way power adjustable driver’s chair is standard. Plus XLT seats wear high-series cloth upholstery, and the floors have matching carpeting. A larger color driver’s screen is added to complement the dashboard touch screen. In addition to keyless entry, this truck has a SecuriCode keypad.
Super Duty Lariat
The Super Duty Lariat cabin is known for its unique Baja color scheme. High quality elements include tarnished metal appliques and micro-perforated leather upholstery. Front passengers have an 8-way power chair. The premium audio system is a 10-speaker B&O professional set-up.
Power-adjustable pedals and an upgraded 10-way power chair make the Lariat an even better place for the driver. Cockpits have an upgraded 8-inch LCD screen behind the steering wheel. This LCD display is even more useful since it provides towing and off-road information. Ford F250 and F350 Lariats come with a choice of the two larger cabins while the Ford F450 Lariat comes with the Crew Cab.
This trim is designed to further assist the driver with daily tasks, towing, and hauling. Equipment includes trailer hitch receivers and integrated brake controller. For better visibility in more situations, it has auto-fold, Power-Scope side mirrors and fog lights. The rear window gains a power-slide capability. An angular chrome step bar helps you in and out of the cab. Parking is easier with a reverse sensor.
Top Trim Levels
To make the most of the spacious Crew Cab, you’ll want to look closely at the King Ranch, Platinum or Limited trim levels. It’s great that these are available with the Ford F250, F350 and F450 models.
Well-appointed and handsome, these Ford Super Duty cabins are outfitted with the most luxurious materials. The upscale King Ranch Super Duty truck has Kingsville antique-effect leather for a rich, rustic look. Wood grain panels enhance the theme. Perhaps most important to Phoenix AZ, this is the first trim level to have standard ventilated front seats.
A dark marsala color scheme with micro-perforated leather has been the highlight of the 2022 Ford F-450 Platinum models. These have Ford’s unique multicontour seats. Drivers can enjoy massage functions even on the busiest day behind the wheel.
From its Miko suede headliner to its Dark Ash Wood, the Limited sits at the top of the trim ladder. The 2022 model earned recognition for the beauty and distinctiveness of its Admiral Blue and Light Slate interior. You can choose your trim with competitive financing from Earnhardt Ford.
Off-roading Packages and the Super Duty Tremor
Every year Ford makes the F Series better prepared to go off-road. Even when they aren’t equipped with four-wheel drive, Super Duty trucks have excellent ground clearance.
With the FX4 package, XLT models gain skid plates and specially tuned shocks. Terrain management makes the 4x4 drivetrain more capable than other trucks this size. Hill Descent Control manages speed on downhill slopes and protects the transmission from abuse.
Top F-250 and F-350 trims are eligible for the Tremor off-road package. To make it taller, it has 35-inch wheels. Terrain management gains multiple off-road settings, including Rock Crawl mode. Ford Trail Control is like Cruise Control, but it is for slow-speed travel off road. With its ground clearance and water-proofed components, Tremor models can ford up to 33 inches of water.
Connectivity for Entertainment and Work
Ford has more ways to connect than ever before. The 8-inch touch screen has pinch-to-zoom capability, making it more like a tablet. Sync tech is complemented by SiriusXM connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto interface. The 12-inch touchscreen provides faster connectivity and a built-in navigation system.
For the first time in a heavy duty truck, a 5G WiFi hotspot is available. With FordPass Connect, an app allows the owner to check mileage, fuel levels and other details. It acts as a remote starter, helping the driver cool the cabin on a hot Phoenix AZ day.
Available Trailer Navigation can show the best route for the size of a trailer in tow. Camera systems can reveal what’s happening around the truck in real time. A 33-foot trailer can be monitored by the blind spot system, making travel safer. Onboard scales technology can weigh the payload.
