The 2024 Ford Expedition and 2024 Ford Expedition Max are big and bigger 3 row SUVs that function as a living room on wheels. Families and family drivers are equally well taken care of< From the entry level package to the top trim, there are favorite amenities and top tech toys./p>
Is the new model year an improvement? Get straight answers in this regular and Expedition Max review.
What’s the Difference Between the Expedition and Expedition Max?
The 2024 Ford Expedition is built on the short-wheelbase platform. It is definitely a large 3 row vehicle with 171.9 cubic feet of passenger space. The cargo area measures 20.9 cubic feet, one of the largest in this class.
Built on a long-wheelbase platform, the 2024 Ford Expedition Max has 172 cubic feet of passenger space. The real difference is the cargo hold, which measures over 34 cubic feet. The sizable area can better accommodate a big family’s travel needs.
Offering 7- or 8-person seating, trim levels for both include the XLT, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum. The short-wheelbase Expedition XL STX trim level is a two-row, 5-person model with a large cargo hold. Another short-wheelbase trim level, the Expedition Timberline model is the champion off-roader in the lineup.
You are invited to Get Pre-Approved for a loan or lease. Our Earnhardt Ford dealership serves the financing needs of many drivers across the Phoenix AZ area.
Cargo and Towing Specifications
A 2024 Expedition has 57.6 cubic feet behind the second row while a 2024 Expedition Max has 79.6 cubes. Behind the first row, the short-wheelbase trims have 104.6 cubic feet while Max editions can offer 121.5 cubes.
XLT and higher trims have a cargo management system for their cargo hold. You can reach your gear using the standard power liftgate or by opening the Expedition liftgate window. Some models have power-folding 2nd-row and/or 3rd-row seats to make it easy to claim the maximum space.
Towing capacity is good for all models. It is 9,300 pounds for rear-wheel drive Expeditions and 9,200 pounds for 4WD Expeditions. The 2024 Ford Expedition Max is bigger, but it can tow almost as much. It is rated at 9,000 pounds. Competitors are often quite limited. For instance, the Volkswagen Atlas can only tow 5,000 pounds at most.
Expedition standards include a trailer hitch and electronic sway control. The optional heavy duty trailer package adds mechanical assistance such as a brake controller. There are important driver aids such as the blind spot trailer watch, pro trailer backup assist, and reverse trailer guidance.
What Legroom and Features are Found on the Expedition Second and Third Row?
On the second row, passengers have a standard 41.5 inches of legroom. If no one is on the third row, this can be even more if passengers slide their seat back, claiming 42.6 inches of legroom.
The 2-3-3 layout includes a standard bench with three seats. Kids can easily move a seat to access the back row. With the 2-2-3 layout, the center seats are reclining captain’s chairs. These can be upgraded with more amenities on the higher trims.
Standard second-row amenities include dedicated air vents and manual air conditioning regulation, perfect for hot summers here in the Phoenix area. These seats also have smart charging ports in easy reach.
Third-row passengers have their own air vents and manual HVAC tools. They have 36.1 inches of legroom. That’s more than many 3 row rivals. In fact, it is more than many 2 row SUVs can offer. Furthermore, since the second row seats slide, there can be as much as 40.9 inches of 3rd row legroom in the 2024 Ford Expedition or Expedition Max./p>
Rear seats can recline to give 3rd-row passengers the maximum wiggle room. On some models, these seats have a power-recline function. Third-row charging ports are a welcome bonus on higher trims.
If you look at rival full size SUVs, you’ll see that the 2024 Ford Expedition has a much more hospitable backrow. This is true of the Toyota Sequoia, which actually costs more than the Expedition at the entry level price.
What Front Row Features and Driver Cockpit Technologies Are On Board?
Ford takes care of the family driver from the start with a standard 8-way adjustable power chair. XL STX Expeditions have dual-zone automatic climate controls while all other models, including the Expedition Max trims, have tri-zone automatic climate controls.
Furthermore, all models have a high tech cockpit with an 8-inch screen beside the instrumentation and a Sync 4 touchscreen. Navigation is available, although it is not built in.
The 15.5-inch touchscreen adds built in navigation with a complementary subscription. It has more features including HD Radio, SiriusXM, and a premium audio system. Digital instrumentation adds another high-tech touch to the driver’s cockpit.
All infotainment systems have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Plus all models are eligible for a 4G LTE Wi Fi hotspot.
What are the Luxury Trim Levels?
Limited, King Ranch and Platinum trims are offered as either short-wheelbase or Max editions. These top trim levels boast luxury-level cabins, the most features, and the best amenities. Most importantly for Phoenix AZ drivers, they have ventilated front seats to cool you off on a hot summer day.
Rich leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen system are standard on the lush Expedition Limited trim level. A power-adjustable passenger chair joins a 10-way adjustable power driver’s chair.
There’s even more lush leather on the King Ranch trim levels. It has the upgraded power-fold captain’s chairs and power-deployable running boards. Technology includes the 360-degree parking camera and the 22-speaker B&O audio system. It’s easier to get comfortable when you have a power-adjustable steering column.
With MutilContour massaging seats, the Expedition Platinum is all about luxury without the legacy pricetag. Wood and leather trim the cabin while active noise cancellation keeps it quiet. Power-fold third-row seats have power-recline functions and power-fold headrests.
If you want the most mysterious exterior, you can choose the Stealth Performance Package. Expedition Stealth models have the twin-turbo engine, a sport-tuned suspension, and 22-inch wheels. There’s a special darkened exterior trim and power-running boards.
What Should the Family Driver Expect?
As premium rides, these three-row Ford SUVs have premium powertrain choices that are sure to please the family driver and the driving enthusiast. Engines include a turbocharged V6, a twin-turbo V6 and a high output twin-turbo V6. Like Ford trucks, a 10-speed automatic transmission makes the most of the power outlay.
Horsepower is 380, 400, or 440 while the torque rate is 470, 480, or 510 lb-ft. With V8 worthy power, every Expedition and Expedition Max is easy to get moving and keep moving. Edmunds, a major auto review site, writes that this muscle-car like torque is rewarding.
Rear-wheel drive models have a ground clearance of 9.7 inches. That rises to 9.8 inches with four-wheel drive.
If off-roading in a 4WD Expedition, the driver can choose a setting for loose terrain such as grass, gravel or snow. Additional terrain management system modes include sand and mud-ruts. Choosing the FX4 package, you get skid plates, a special suspension, and an electronic limited slip differential.
With the Timberline trim model, the Expedition comes equipped with more underbody protection, more skid plates, a premium off-road suspension, upgraded shocks, and beefy tires. Available only in the short-wheelbase model to allow for shorter approach angles, this trim level has a ground clearance of 10.7 inches.
With trail control in charge of accelerating and braking, the Expedition Timberline driver does the steering. They can enjoy the view, while watching for trouble utilizing the 360-degree surround-view camera.
What is Blue Cruise and Ford Copilot 360?
Blue Cruise is an exclusive Ford feature that allows for hands free driving in the 2024 Ford Expedition under special circumstances. This combines the intelligent adaptive cruise control and lane keeping. Drivers stay ready to take over, but the full size SUV controls the brakes, acceleration, and steering.
Ford Coplot 360 is a range of standard features found on the Expedition. It starts with forward collision avoidance, including pedestrians and intersection dangers. This may trigger automatic emergency braking.
Then there’s the blind spot monitor to help drivers make safer lane changes. Lane keeping assist warns drivers to stay within the lines and helps with steering to correct the big rig’s trajectory.
CoPilot 360 includes a rear cross traffic alert. It warns drivers about side traffic when doing a reverse maneuver into a road or in a parking lot. Higher trims gain a reverse autobrake and parking sensors.
Post-impact braking may be triggered if the Expedition actually gets into a major accident. This Ford exclusive safety feature seeks to prevent further damage and to assist an injured driver with stopping the SUV.
Parking Assist takes the stress out of parking in a parallel or perpendicular space. It can follow the marked lines, control throttle and braking, and recognize dangers as it puts the 3 Row SUV into a marked spot.
If you need a big SUV for your family, you need to check out the Expedition and Expedition Max. Schedule a test drive of your favorite trim level at your Earnhardt Ford dealer Chandler AZ.
