2024 Ford Ranger Review | New Ranger Raptor Explained
The 2024 Ford Ranger represents a brand new generation of this midsize truck. This pickup is setting itself even further apart from its popular smaller sibling, the Ford Maverick.
Ready to impress hardcore adventure seekers, there’s a 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor. This ride offers everything that an F-150 Raptor fan would expect.
Two exciting powertrains join the lineup, bringing your options to three. New bed features have been added, and a whole new interior is ready to handle its responsibilities to passengers and gear alike. Here’s what you should know.
New Size, New Exterior
Tougher and more muscular, the 2024 Ford Ranger is wider with a more sculpted hood and a more upright roofline. New fender vents are styled for each trim, and they work, channeling air to cool off the engine.
There are hints of the Ford F-150 without usurping the Ranger’s original styling. This includes C-shaped headlights and tail lights that give the Ranger a unique look whether it’s day or night.;
The new build allows for tighter approach and departure angles, adding to the Ranger’s readiness to stray off-road.; Shoppers can choose FX4 or Tremor for different levels of trail riding, or they can go for the maximum with the all new Ranger Raptor.
2024 Ranger Raptors wear FORD proudly across their grille. Flared fenders and steel bumpers set them further apart.; Trail protections include three underbody shields plus a thick front base plate. Ground clearance is 10.7 inches, thanks in part to the 33-inch tires. Fronted by 17-inch wheels, these beauties are all-terrain KO3 BF Goodrich.
More Spacious, Gracious Cabin
With a better fit and finish, the cabin has higher quality touches. Dashboards now wear honeycomb style vents, an upright touchscreen, a digital instrument screen, and textured trim. Whether XL, XLT or Lariat trims, the seats are especially comfortable with flexible bolsters.
Rangers have grown by a few inches, providing more space for everything. The second row of the four-door SuperCrew cab has 38.3 inches of legroom to make adult passengers feel much more at home. These larger crew cabs and the 5-foot bed will be the first 2024 Rangers to come to market.
Fold-flat rear seats add more cargo flexibility. Tools and other gear can be stashed in the larger center console, bigger door pockets, and two differently-sized rear under-seat bins. A hidden upper glove box is another bonus.
Equipped with a wireless charger and navigation, the XLT is once again a desirable trim level. Leather seating and more amenities set the Lariat apart.
From Code Orange accents to the top dashboard technology, the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor cabin hints at the excitement available off road. The cockpit has a special sport steering wheel and larger digital instrument cluster.
New Bed Steps, More Versatility
If the XL work truck is all you want, you start off with some great advantages. For starters, every 2024 Ford Ranger now has bed steps. Located behind the rear wheel openings, these are larger than rival steps. They are considered wide enough for both feet and can support 300 pounds.
Tailgates are smarter than ever. These can double as your workbench, complete with a molded-in ruler. New beds are wider at the wheel wells. This allows you to rest 4 x 4 sheets of plywood between them easily. In fact, the space measures 48.2 inches wide.
There are longer bed rail beds for greater flexibility. With three rail access points, six bed tie-downs, and two new clamping points on the tailgate itself, there are more ways to secure your load.
Ecoboost Engines
Ford Rangers have proven that the 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine is a good choice for a midsize truck. Fuel economy is one of the best in the midsize class, averaging 21/26 mpg in city/highway driving.
Output is 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. These numbers climb quickly with the new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. More fuel friendly than any V8, it cranks out V8-like numbers. Maximum torque is 400 lb-ft for this 315-horsepower engine.
Just like the 2023 model, the 2024 Ranger is the only one in the midsize class to have a 10-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters can add some manual transmission driving fun to these automatics.
Front wheel drive is standard, and many shoppers add the available rear locking differential. With four-wheel drive, the Ranger becomes even more formidable. Ford performance is always top notch.
Racy Ranger Raptor
The 2024 Ranger Raptor has a high-speed engine and the top terrain management drive modes. Race car tech is how Motor Trend summarizes it. In Baja mode, there’s actually a deliberate turbo lag that lets it build up more push in high speeds.
This trail-blazer has a sophisticated twin-turbo V6 that provides serious V8-worthy output. Drivers command 405 horsepower, which is best in class. This midsize truck was built to be competitive on busy highways, steep mountain roads, and anywhere else that life takes you.
The DirectShift transmission and a special 4x4 system help harness the 430 lb-ft of torque to ensure the most help at low speeds and the most competitiveness at high speeds. Front and rear locking differentials allow for the most versatility on the road and on the dirt.
Your current truck may be a ticket to a new Ranger or Ranger Raptor. Why not check its value? The Kelley Blue Book valuation tool is easy to use.
Off-Roading Raptor, Tremor and FX4
Kelley Blue Book suggests the new Ranger Raptor is available for “dirt-slinging, chaos-causing fun”. Already tested in independent races, this truck certainly has no trouble standing up to the Tacoma TRD Pro or the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.
Every Ranger is built strong, but the off-road models have more refined suspensions. In the case of the Raptor, the suspension, towers, brackets and mounts are both reinforced and upgraded.
Shocks are Fox Live Valve Internal Bypass 2.5-inch style. Piggyback reservoirs help absorb heat during speedy drives or hard pushes on a desert trail. The special 4x4 system has front and rear locking differentials to assist its advanced suspension.
Tremor and FX4 Rangers have skid plates to protect the engine, fuel tank, and transfer case. Steel bumpers and a front bash plate are additional Raptor standards. With so many off-road experts in one lineup, shoppers have a better chance of finding the right one for their adventure style and their budget.
Trail Blazing Technology
Not only can Rangers blaze a trail, they are offered with cutting-edge technologies that assist with on-road and off-road travel. On the dirt, Trail Control regulates the throttle and braking, leaving the driver to steer.
A 360-degree camera system handles parking but it also doubles as a trail watch system. Your digital instrumentation and touchscreen can provide off-roading information such as pitch and angle. Ranger Raptors have Ford’s front view camera system for an even closer look at what’s on the trail.
Pro Trailer Backup Assist has a special dial that allows the driver to move the trailer left or right while the truck continues to go straight. Trailer Reverse Guidance assists with regular duties such as hook up and normal reverse maneuvers.
With the blind spot system, an owner can program the length of 10 different trailers. On the road, the system can watch the trailer’s blind spot. This really assists with safety on the go.
More Driver Assistance
The Ford Ranger XL will have the essentials of today’s driver assistance. This includes automatic emergency braking to assist with forward collision warnings. A lane departure warning and automatic high beams round out the high tech standards.
When fully equipped, the Ranger can have emergency evasive steering and intersection collision mitigation as part of its forward collision-avoidance system. Lane keep assist and a blind spot monitor help the truck avoid side collisions.
Adaptive Cruise Control has Stop and Go capability to respond to sudden slow downs without as much input from the driver. Additional available features include a rear cross traffic alert and reverse automatic braking.
For the first time, Ford’s midsize truck offers Active Park Assist 2.0. This device can put the Ranger in or take it out of a parking space. Fully automated, it works for both parallel and perpendicular spaces.
High Tech Dashboard
XL models start you off right with a new 8-inch digital instrument screen to complement the 10.1-inch touchscreen. This makes the Ranger one of the most competitive base models on the market.
The large touchscreen provides users with all the essentials, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. New for 2024, all Rangers offer an available WiFi hotspot. Dual USB ports are standard, and a wireless charger is on the menu.
Also new, a best-in-class 12-inch touchscreen comes with Ford Sync4A and navigation. Ranger Raptors add a large 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster. It also has an active exhaust system
Using the dash tech, a driver can control exterior functions, including the exclusive Zone lighting. With the bed lights and Zone lights, nighttime activities are easier.
Towing Capability and Payload Capacity
Towing capacity is still 7,500 pounds. This exceeds most rivals by anywhere from 2,500 lbs (2023 Honda Ridgeline) to 1000 pounds (2023 Nissan Frontier).
The 2023 GMC Canyon claims a top tow rating of 7,700 pounds, but it costs an extra $5,000 or more to achieve those numbers. Otherwise, the Canyon’s tow rating is 6,000 pounds.
Ranger payload capacity tops out at just over 1800 pounds. That’s 1,100 to 1,200 more than the Tacoma V6 or Nissan Frontier. New Ranger Raptors can handle 1,411 pounds of payload.
With so much to explore in the new Ranger and Ranger Raptor, the best idea is to visit your Earnhardt Ford dealer Phoenix AZ. You can schedule a test drive and enjoy testing out the new engines and technologies.
