2023 Ford Expedition Review | Expedition Max Explained
The 2023 Ford Expedition and Ford Expedition Max are refined 3-row family rides with elegant interiors, performance engines, and exciting features. You can turn this large SUV into an adventure machine with the FX4 package or Timberline trim level.
The new model year builds on the success of the completely revamped 2022 Ford Expedition. Here’s what you need to know about this generous 3-row ride. It’s available now from your Earnhardt Ford dealership in Phoenix AZ.
Expedition Interior
Space is the first requirement for parents looking for seating for 7 or 8. They will not be disappointed with the 2023 Ford Expedition for sale. When reviewers speak of the 2023 Expedition interior, they use adjectives like vast, massive, and cavernous. Standard models boast 171.9 cubic feet while Max models boast 172 cubic feet of passenger space.
Even bigger, the 2023 Ford Expedition Max has a longer wheelbase. This enables it to offer maximum cargo space to match the generous passenger space.
Comfortable front seats are especially cushy. Power-adjustable, these chairs are easy to customize to fit your needs. They can be power heated and ventilated and offer massage functions.
The second row benefits from excellent legroom and cushy seats. 2nd-row passengers enjoy 41.5 to 42.6 inches of legroom in standard and Max models. Accessibility for the third row is especially easy. 3rd row passengers enjoy a remarkable 36.1 inches of legroom that can grow to 40.9 inches if the second row is fully forward.
Parents have multiple places to fit children’s safety seats. They’ll find it easy to fit them, whether forward or rear facing. You can see how your family fits the Expedition when you take a test drive. Schedule online.
XL STX and XLT Trim Levels
The Expedition has a wide range of trim levels, matching many budgets and lifestyles. Timberline adventure models are offered with the standard wheelbase only. The XLT, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum are offered with the regular or Max wheelbase.
With seating for five and a giant cargo hold, the XL STX is a favorite Expedition for smaller families and for anyone who wants to take advantage of all that this large SUV has to offer. Drivers enjoy a power tilt-and-lumbar adjustable chair.
The Sync 4 touchscreen is a 12-inch center display. Behind the steering wheel, the analog gauge cluster is assisted by an 8-inch productivity screen. Modern conveniences include a trim rotary shifter and push button start. Data plans provide a WiFi hotspot for up to ten devices.
Stepping up to the Ford Expedition XLT or XLT Max, the cabin is cooled by a tri-zone automatic system and there are auxiliary controls for the second and third row. Second-row seats have a reclining capability and offer Ford’s CenterSlide function.
Timberline models have a distinctive upholstery and other decorative elements to set it apart. This trim level adds power adjustable pedals for the driver, an 8-way power chair for the front seat passenger, and power-folding 2nd- and 3rd-rows for cargo.
Luxury Trim Levels
Limited and Limited Max models are so well appointed that they could be the top trim. The cabin has a Panoramic Vista roof, seats wear a rich leather upholstery, and the audio system is upgraded to a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen.
Wearing a stone gray trim and 22-inch wheels, there’s no mistaking the fun of a King Ranch or larger King Ranch Max. New exterior features include power-deployable running boards. Cabins have a lush leather upholstery and power-fold 2nd-row captain’s chairs.
There’s a 15.5-inch touch screen and a 22-speaker B&O sound system. The rearview camera is upgraded to a 360-degree system. With SurroundView, you can see everything around the SUV’s perimeter.
Platinum and Platinum Max models are the ultimate luxury liners. Ford saves the best leather upholstery for this top trim and combines it with wood and leather interior accents. Active noise cancellation is added for the quietest cabin possible.
The front seats have MultiContour massaging and power ventilation. ActiveMotion massage action helps protect the driver and passenger from the typical lower back problems and leg fatigue associated with long drives.
With power-fold Captain’s chairs, this model has standard 7-passenger seating. The power-recline third row chairs have power-folding head restraints when not needed. For the latest on the Ford Expedition price, get a quick quote online.
Cargo and Utility
The Expedition has 20.9 cubic feet of standard storage space. By comparison, that’s larger than the typical large sedan. Folding the seats, it grows to 57.6 or 104.6 cubic feet. The smart liftgate has a lift-glass window to allow for a second point of access.
Expedition Max models claim 34.3 to 36 cubic feet behind the third row. That grows to 79.6 or 121.5 cubic feet, thanks to the long wheelbase.
Towing capacity is a generous 9,000 pounds (Expedition Max), 9,200 pounds (standard 4x4) or 9,300 pounds (standard rear-wheel drive). That’s enough to pull a camper for your next family vacation. A class IV trailer hitch receiver is standard, and a heavy-duty trailer tow package adds an integrated trailer brake controller.
Ford is still one of the few automobile manufacturers to offer trailer coverage with the blind spot monitor. This makes towing safer mile after mile. Pro Trailer Backup Assist provides a special steering knob for moving the trailer into a parking spot.
Performance Options
The 2023 Ford Expedition and Expedition Max are big rigs, and they need significant power. Fortunately they’ve got it. The standard engine is a turbocharged V6. It creates 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.
Platinum models are upgraded to a twin-turbo V6 with 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. It has a continuously controlled damping suspension for the ultimate luxury ride quality.
With the Timberline or the Stealth Performance package, drivers can enjoy a high output twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 440 horsepower. Torque is rated at a massive 510 lb-ft of torque.
Timberline and Off-Roading Capability
All Expedition models claim a high ground clearance of 9.7 or 9.8 inches. 4x4 models claim even more capability for straying off the road.
With Intelligent 4WD, all 4x4 models have terrain management. This system includes a loose terrain setting known as grass-gravel-snow. It has a sand setting for low traction situations. For uneven surfaces, there’s Mud-Ruts mode.
The Timberline model boosts ground clearance to 10.6 inches. Premium off-road shocks are paired with a rough road suspension. These models have steel underbody protection and skid plates. All terrain tires and an underbody-mounted spare tire are ready for action.
Ford Trail Control utilizes the anti-lock brakes to target wheels that need braking on the trail. This sensor-based system improves traction on the trail.
If you want more off-roading equipment but aren’t interested in the Timberline, the FX4 Off-road package is the way to go. It adds the same exterior protections, suspension and tires. Other FX4 extras include the surround-view camera and an electronic limited-slip differential.
Crash Avoidance and Automated Driving Assistance
All 2023 Expeditions have earned a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA. Additional standards include a lane keeper, a blind spot monitor, and automatic emergency braking with a forward collision warning.
Ford also includes post-impact braking that can respond during a collision to slow the vehicle and hopefully minimize further damage. Park Assist takes all the frustration out of parallel and perpendicular parking. Adaptive cruise control can be used in busy high-speed traffic situations.
BlueCruise is Ford’s hands-free driving experience. Useful on specifically designated highways, the system can control the throttle, brakes and steering while the driver’s only job is to stay alert and take over at the right time.
These large Ford SUVs now offer zone lighting. With the FordPass App and the vehicle screen, the driver can light the area around the SUV to suit their safety needs.
Our Ford Expedition inventory includes the 2023 and 2022 Expeditions as well as used Expeditions covered by Blue Advantage Gold and Blue CPO plans. Shopping is more fun with plenty of choices, no bull pricing, and Earnhardt Ford’s excellent customer service.
